Walking safaris in Africa are completely different to game drives; being on foot brings about a totally new way of understanding the environment and heightens your senses, dulled over years by city traffic and lights, to your natural surroundings. On our walking safaris, you will be gently and expertly guided through the bush for an up-close and personal experience.
Accommodation is in fly-camps set up in beautifully isolated locations, which camp staff will prepare so that by the time you arrive, a fire is lit and a welcome drink is waiting. Lemala provides a high level of comfort in these camps and a communal mess tent is erected for relaxing and dining. Guests sleep in 2-person dome tents, or the more adventurous can experience sleeping out under the huge Serengeti sky in our ‘star tent’, which is constructed from only mosquito-proof netting (although a splash sheet is easy to put up in the event of rain).
In the early morning after a wake-up call and a delicious bush breakfast, we set out on or walking safari. We carry lunch with us and enjoy it at a scenic stop before continuing the walk and aim to arrive back at camp around 3pm. A late afternoon walk to a nearby scenic area is made even more perfect with sundowner drinks. At the end of the day, sit around the campfire and reminisce on the exciting adventures of the day.
All our walking safaris are multi-day with 2 nights (1 1/2 days walking) or 3 nights (2 1/2 days walking) in the bush, although longer programs can be arranged. We generally move the fly-camp only on safaris that are longer than 2 nights. In addition to the nights in the fly-camp, you will start your safari with a couple of nights in Lemala Mara Tented Camp and you will end with a night in sublime luxury at Lemala Kuria Hills Lodge. You can of course add extra nights at these should you wish. We have a backup vehicle, which also carries luggage, so guests never need to carry more than a day pack.
