'Here is a recent comment from a Lemala guest:

Overall, the trip was fantastic. In particular, the guides were absolutely great and went out of their way to find (and re-find) animals. Both of our guides – Samson Wilson in Ngorongoro, and Michael Massonda in the northern Serengeti – were excellent guides. We saw things that others in their own vehicles simply did not see, like a black rhino, a leopard and her cub, a family of cheetahs, etc., etc. Moreover, whenever we had a special request (such as going to see up close a long moving line of wildebeest I had seen in the distance), the guides would make it happen, even if it meant changing their plans and literally going far out of their way. I really don’t see how we could have had better guides, and that made all the difference!

The Lemala camps were wonderful as well. Both were beautifully managed, with great staffs – and if I had to single anyone out in particular, it would be the manager of the Ngorongoro camp, who was really outstanding, even to include putting up with the constant desire of my 11 year-old daughter to play. That is not to take anything away from anyone else, however. They were all great, from the guards to the cooks to the managers. The care given and quality of the camps was consistently very high; in fact, I would say, it was outstanding'

Happy New Year!

The migration has moved down from the Central Serengeti and is now concentrated in the Ndutu area. Widespread rains have fallen in this area which has turned the short grass plains into an endless emerald green carpet. Huge herds of wildebeest and zebra can be seen all the way from Ndutu to the east of Seronera and across the Olduvai Plains, feeding on the calcium rich grasses of the volcanic soils in preparation for the forthcoming calving season. An estimated 400,000 calves will be born during this period.

Lemala Ndutu has undoubtedly one of the the best locations in the area, close to the short grass plains and overlooking the permanent marsh where predator hunts are frequent and furious. Recently some of our guests witnessed lions half way up an umbrella thorn tree. Above the lions was a big male leopard and a hundred meters from them were a group of cheetah. All this only a few hundred meters from our camp. The guests then celebrated this high drama with sundowners on the plains amidst the migration.

Another group of our guests witnessed a leopard inside a vulture’s nest on the top of an acacia tree busy eating a white stork.

The migration will remain in this area until March/April when the calving is over and then start to move north-westwards towards the western Serengeti corridor where Lemala Ewanjan opens in June along the Grumeti River.

We still have plenty of space available in Jan, Feb and March together with special rates so do send your guests to Lemala - they won't be dissapointed.

Last week, Lemala Mara guests witnessed three crossings in one day. However, the Lamai triangle in the Northern Serengeti is now virtually empty of wildebeest, most having crossed the Mara River. The large Nile Crocodiles can be seen basking on the sand banks or submerged in the river with their eyes peering above the water looking for any opportunity to pounce on the trailing herds.

The vast congregation of animals have now splintered into smaller herds and are moving intermittently on their journey to the south. There are several of these herds in the Wogakuria area where Lemala Mara is based. Some herds can be seen on the ridge facing the camp. Most of the adult females will be about three and a half to four months pregnant now and will be ready to give birth around February near Lemala Ndutu where our new open 4x4 landcruisers will offer off-road game drives. Last year Lemala Ndutu had 2 leopards, 2 cheetah families and 2 lion prides near the camp and guests enjoyed fabulous game viewing during their stay. The camp is close to permanent water which attracts large amount of game from December to March.

As the open woodlands and plains in the north empty of wildebeest, so the herds of buffalo and eland will appear from the east. Sightings of lion kills are still common around Wogakuria and Kogatende with prides of over 20 needing food constantly  The prides can still be seen stretched out in the shade on the large granite boulders during the heat of the day. We expect the prides to remain in the area but they will extend their home range as the availability of prey decreases.

Grumeti Expeditions clients are experiencing a large numbers of wildebeest in the Western Corridor around Nyasirori and Ruwana Plains.

Lemala Ngorongoro clients witnessed lions successfully hunting a zebra last week. Black rhino sightings are still common with most clients able to see the all the big game on one game drive.
